Description: This Church Avenue gem is a throwback to the 1950s, including several signs hanging about that let you know the staff is in charge here. The red-and-white dining area is a little cramped, mostly with men; however, as the sign outside announces, "Yes, women are welcome!" The food is your typical greasy spoon fare, and the Texas Tavern is popular as a late night or early morning dinner/breakfast joint.

This classic diner was built in 1930 and hasn't changed a bit in its almost 75 years. When you stop in for a quick bite to eat, try their two most popular dishes: the Cheesy Western (a hamburger cooked in an egg, served on a bun with relish and onions), and a "bowl with"- a bowl of Roanoke style Chile with lots of beans. The "with" means you want onions on top. The restaurant is open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year (closed Christmas day), and has a breakfast menu served from sometime in the early morning until 10 a.m. This is a "must visit" place for anyone coming to Roanoke.
