Recently my wife and I were entertained by some friends at La Caterina, and we could not have been happier. They offered a true taste of old world southern Italian cuisine, made from scratch using local, organic meats and produce. We sat on their wonderfully charming patio, but I can hardly wait to return and sit in one of their cozy, romantic dining rooms. Their wine list was exceptional and very reasonable, with a strong focus on southern Italian wines. I understand that it has been recognized by Wine Spectator for 5 straight years. The service staff was very attentive, and knowledgable. I would highly recommend this establishment, in fact I would say that it has the best food, at the best value, in all of Asheville. |

We were a party of 7. All adults, one 8 year old girl. Maybe it’s because it was Sunday and the Chef was off. I don’t know. What I do know is that it was one of the worst meals we have had. Granted I am a little spoiled after having lived in NYC for 14 years but I do know what is considered good food and this was not it. Food quality was very poor starting with the stale bread. 2 kinds of stale bread. The 8 year old wanted some butter for the bread as most children turn their nose up at dipping oil. I was told that there was no butter to place on the bread.
Let’s talk appetizers…Melanzane Involtini, “Grilled eggplant rolls stuffed with goat cheese, roasted red peppers & basil 6.50.” The eggplant was tough and old. Almost unable to cut it with a knife. Terrible.
Polpettini di Anatra. Petite duck meatballs roasted in skillet, topped with pecorino pepato 5.95. These were not too bad. Served in a sizzling skillet.
Antipasti Salumi. Assorted in-house cured meats, aged provolone, olives and giardiniera 6.50. Boring. Very Plain.
Mozzarella. In-house made, served with caponata 5.50. If it was made in house I would be very surprised
Soups. I was the only one that had the soup and none of the veggies were fresh. It seemed to be made with some form of soup starter and they added things too it to spruce up a tasteless soup. Might as well have been a frozen base. Skip it.
Main courses. Manicotti Quarto Formaggio. In-house made manicotti filled with ricotta, gorgonzola, and romano. Baked with mozzarella and marinara sauce 14.50. This dish was so over cooked the pasta was mush. I tasted no gorgonzola and the ricotta was weak at best. I ate half and left the rest. Didn’t even bother to take it home.
Palli Angelli con Bucatini. Petite chicken meatballs in light gorgonzola cream sauce tossed with bucatini 13.95. The only tasty part was the chicken meatballs. Again…half was left…no take home…waste of time. I could have topped this dish with Chef Boy-R-Dee. No spice no zest no flavor.
Lamb Steak Special. Braised with marsala and wild mushrooms. Served on soft polenta 15.95. No polenta…just a few pieces of diced potatoes that came off of a hotel breakfast buffet. The person that ordered this is a big meat eater. Again, left half on plate.
3 other people ordered specials. To save time and space one was hardly touched. Forget taking it home. My wife said her pasta dish was the most tasteless bland cream sauce she has ever tasted. Half left. Not even salt and pepper could improve this. The 8 year old had the pizza…no great shakes…call pizza hut. My advice and everyone at the table’s….skip this place. What a disappointment. The service was very good. Maybe it was an off night. We had never been and I picked it off the net as a very good restaurant. Caught a lot of grief as it was the in-laws from chicago in town and meeting friends. I wish them luck and you too if you visit. |
