Although his batting average ranked as third-best of all time, it wasn't enough to prevent Joe's banishment from baseball during the infamous scandal of the Chicago "Black Sox." |

TIGERVILLE. Built at the turn of the last century, this gabled structure stands as the state's only covered bridge. Its solid construction and picturesque setting attract history buffs and tourists alike, and photographers appreciate its nostalgic flavor. To visit, take US Highway 25 north to State Road 414 through Tigerville. Then turn right onto Pleasant Hill Road and take another right onto Campbell's Bridge Road. |

FURMAN. Founded in 1826, Furman University is a nationally ranked liberal arts college located at the foot of Paris Mountain. Classical red brick buildings, sparkling fountains and meticulous landscaping adorn the 750-acre campus. A paved walking path, picnic areas and resident swans draw many visitors to the scenic lake. The ivory belltower, a university landmark, overlooks the water. In addition to the attractive grounds, the university features a full slate of athletic and performing arts events each season. |

Today, it is the headquarters of the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs and is available for weddings and other private functions. Distinctive features of this historic home are its copper roof, hand-blown glass windows, and wood peg construction. Lovely gardens complement the five acres surrounding the structure. |

Description:
LYMAN. With its moss-covered stones and Gothic arch, this dirt-paved bridge appears practically medieval. It's not, but an 1820 construction date marks it as the oldest bridge in South Carolina. Originally built as part of the road between Greenville and Asheville, it's a tribute to craftsmanship and history. To reach it, take US 25 north to Old US 25. Go approximately three miles and turn right onto Callahan Mountain Road. The bridge is about two miles on the left. |

NORTH MAIN. Constructed by a former governor of South Carolina, this magnificent plantation house was built in 1813 as a vacation residence. Its stately setting contributes to the beauty of what is now the oldest home in Greenville. Although it was a dormitory for nurses during the Spanish-American War, it is a private residence today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Not open to the public. |
