Best Brunch (Restaurants)

Café Strudel
(Restaurants - Brunch)
118 State St, West Columbia  29169 • 803-794-6634
Description: CAYCE / WEST COLUMBIA. Café Strudel is a trusted destination for breakfast and dessert, no matter what time it is. Their Hangover Hashbrowns (smothered with onions, peppers, cheese and two eggs) are simply fantastic, and they're available all day. More traditional lunch options include soups, salads, well-stuffed sandwiches and burgers. But if you just want a little something sweet or a steaming cup of coffee, you'll be quite happy with your choices here. Sunday brunch is most wonderful, too.

Congaree Grill
(Restaurants - Brunch)
827 Harden St, Columbia  29205 • 803-771-8001
Description: FIVE POINTS. You're hungry. You want something comforting and classic, and you want affordable prices and clean-lined, modern ambience. Congaree Grill is just the place. Stuff yourself with fried dill pickles, Lowcountry eggrolls (chicken, andouille, corn and collards fried in a wonton skin), a pimiento cheese BLT, "Slap Your Pappy" Meatloaf, peach barbecue chicken, grilled Cajun trout, or the ubiquitous shrimp and grits. So what's the most appropriate follow-up to such a bounty of Southern goodness? Moon Pie banana pudding or Krispy Kreme bread pudding, of course.

Di Prato's
(Restaurants - Brunch)
342 Pickens St, Columbia  29205 • 803-779-0606
Description: UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA. Another enterprise from the owners of Dianne's on Devine, this gourmet sandwich shop is a step above customary lunch fare. It's a bit off the usual tourist's radar, which is a good thing because the line-ups at lunch are above average (although they do move quickly). The signature sandwiches are downright fantastic: a triple-decker reuben, an oyster po' boy, grilled portabella with fresh spinach and pesto mayo, Italian hoagies, and more. Or design your own from a vast list of ingredients. You could eat here every day for weeks and not have the same sandwich twice.

Motor Supply Company Bistro
(Restaurants - Brunch)
920 Gervais St, Columbia  29201 • 803-256-6687
Description: THE VISTA. Motor Supply was the first restaurant to open in the revamped Vista district – a couple of decades in the business has only strengthened its reputation as a great place for a casually upscale meal. Menus change twice daily but usually include a grilled steak or two plus dishes such as house-brined pork chops, Dijon-fried eggplant over spinach and artichoke hearts, steamed mussels, and sautéed shrimp with ham and grits. Their wine list has garnered a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and their Sunday brunch is among the best in town.

Saluda's
(Restaurants - Brunch)
751 Saluda Ave, Columbia  29205 • 803-799-9500
Description: FIVE POINTS. Housed in a carefully renovated historic VFW officers club, augmented with an 1800s mahogany bar and a gorgeous 1915 Schomacker grand piano, Saluda's is elegant and sophisticated. The chefs focus on Southern and Continental dishes, frequently tweaking favorites for a more modern presentation. Try oysters Rockefeller bruschetta, fried green tomatoes with goat cheese and a balsamic reduction, seared scallops with tomato-saffron sauce and white truffle risotto, or blackened chicken with SC peach and honey marmalade. Perfect for a swanky Sunday brunch, too.
