Description:
This picturesque island is located across the Caliboque Bay from Hilton Head and is only accessible by boat. Steeped in history and still very much unspoiled, the Island was used as the setting in Pat Conroy's novel, "The Water is Wide." Visit the one-room Island Elementary School, the First Union Baptist Church, circa 1880 and the Mary Dunn Cemetery with gravestones dating back to the late 1790's. If you don't have a boat, you can contact any number of tour companies for tour information and costs. |

Description:
Get away from the hustle and bustle of Hilton Head and spend a day in this charming village located west of Hilton Head off Highway 278. There are about a dozen historic homes, a beautiful 1857 Gothic-style Church of the Cross, and the classic revival 1853 Campbell Chapel AME Church whose members have held services for over 100 years. These are the only structures to survive destruction during the Civil War. |
