Best Asian (Restaurants)
(10 Overall Closest)
Amarin Thai
(Restaurants - Asian)
3843 Richmond Rd, San Diego  92103 • 619-296-6056
Description: HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. San Diego has a number of good Thai restaurants, but Amarin is widely considered to be the very best. Ingredients are unfailingly fresh, seasonings are exceptionally well-balanced, the spice level can be tailored to your preferences, and virtually every dish can be made vegetarian. Yes, pad thai is on the menu, but if you've been thinking of branching out a little this is the place to do it. The choices are vast, both traditional and contemporary, and the staff is helpful and accommodating. Unusually for a Thai restaurant, Amarin has a well-chosen wine list.

Description: GASLAMP QUARTER. Contemporary décor and a modern small plates approach to dining are Chive’s hallmarks. Isabel's Cantina
(Restaurants - Asian)
966 Felspar St, San Diego  92109 • 858-272-8400
Description: PACIFIC BEACH. The Cantina is among the top breakfast places in town, with good reason: banana blackberry pancakes, breakfast tamales, roast beef hash and eggs, and coconut French toast. As for lunch and dinner, the Asian-Latin fusion menu truly does have something for everyone. Try a bonsai burrito, lettuce wraps, plantains with carnitas, chicken prepared one of four ways (Asian, Latino, Dragon or Isabel style), or seared ahi. "Big Bowls," in themselves vegetarian, can have chicken, tofu, or beef added. Pineapple fried rice, udon noodles, and Brazillian style rice and beans are especially tasty.

Jimmy Carter's Mexican Cafe
(Restaurants - Asian)
807 W Washington St, San Diego  92103 • 619-296-6952
Description: HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. No, not the former US President. Jimmy Carter in this instance is a local restaurateur who wanted to provide a casual neighborhood eatery inexpensive but tasty food and friendly service. He succeeds on both counts. At first glance, the menu is a bit odd, including a hodge podge of international dishes. The standouts, though, are Mexican in origin. And though all the food is good, breakfast is awesome. Luckily, the stellar chilaquiles, huevos rancheros and breakfast burritos are available all day.

Karinya
(Restaurants - Asian)
825 Garnet Ave, San Diego  92109 • 858-270-5050
Description: PACIFIC BEACH. Karinya has mastered the complex blend and balance of flavors that’s the hallmark of Thai cooking. Start with soup – both tom yum and tom kah are wonderful – or fresh spring rolls. The menu features a wide variety of main dishes, but pad thai and drunken noodles are both excellent examples for folks who are unfamiliar with Thai cuisine. Tamarind-ginger fish is a sure winner; curries, stir-fries and fried rice can be prepared with your choice of chicken, beef, pork, duck, shrimp or tofu. Be sure to save room for coconut ice cream or fried bananas for dessert.

Kemo Sabe
(Restaurants - Asian)
3958 5th Ave, San Diego  92103 • 619-220-6802
Description: HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. Local celeb chef Deborah Scott has developed a reputation for adventurous combinations of global cuisines. At Kemo Sabe she blends Asian and Southwestern flavors, with great success, as in the Arizona roll (chipotle tortilla with hoisin roasted duck, peach chutney, goat cheese and a kick from wasabi-avocado-serrano salsa). “Skirts on Fire” is a charbroiled skirt steak with mandarin-serrano relish and black beans; tahini chicken salad piles shredded veggies and chicken with a peanut-basil dressing. Expect incredibly artistic presentation, spicy, multi-layered flavors and unique contemporary Asian-Western décor.

Nobu
(Restaurants - Asian)
207 5th Ave Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, San Diego  92101 • 619-814-4124
Description: GASLAMP QUARTER. This international, celeb-favored chain sports an elegant dining room accented with bamboo and black lacquer. Patrons appear as often to eat as to be seen, so be prepared for noise and inflated prices. However, the food doesn't disappoint. The omakase, a set-price menu of the chef's choosing, customarily includes cold and hot dishes, sushi, tempura, soup, and dessert. Premium ingredients like toro (the fatty, prime cut of tuna) and Kobe beef are employed with aplomb. Save this gem for a special occasion or to impress a client.
