Alfonso's of La Jolla |
|
(Restaurants - Mexican) |
|
1251 Prospect St, La Jolla 92037 858-454-2232 |
 |
| |
Description:
LA JOLLA. The old adage “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” applies to restaurants too. When in La Jolla, join locals at Alfonso’s for casual, satisfying gringo-ized Mexican comfort food and sweet-tart margaritas. Be sure to ask for a table on the patio, as that’s where the best people watching is. The food is typical but good – carne asada is the standout, but seafood dishes are a good alternative. |

2461 San Diego Ave, San Diego 92110 619-291-4695 |
 |
| |
Description:
OLD TOWN. From tortillas to tamales to salsa, Coyote Café makes everything from scratch every day, on the premises. Start the day with a Breakfast Margarita, chilaquiles, menudo, or a chile relleno omelette. For lunch, try the chile verde, a quesadilla, tortilla soup, or a taco salad. If your appetite is massive by dinnertime, this is the place to go. Hearty portions of traditional and gringo favorites arrive steaming and flavorful: tamales, tequila-lime shrimp, carnitas, California burritos (huge tortilla stuffed with carne asada, cheese and French fries!), and enchiladas. Good margaritas, a decent selection of tequila, pitchers of sangria, and ice cold cerveza, too. |

Casa Guadalajara |
|
(Restaurants - Mexican) |
|
4105 Taylor St Bazaar del Mundo, San Diego 92110 619-295-5111 |
 |
| |
Description:
Old Town is among San Diego’s top tourist stops, and all those visitors need to eat somewhere. Mexican restaurants are obviously popular, and Casa Guadalajara in Bazaar del Mundo ranks near the top of the list. Tortillas made in-house, fab margaritas and live mariachi bands give it an edge over much of the competition, but the food is quite well-prepared and fresh, with all the expected choices plus a few non-standard ones. Be prepared to wait on weekend evenings. |

Chuey's |
|
(Restaurants - Mexican) |
|
1901 Main St, San Diego 92113 619-234-6937 |
 |
| |
Description:
EAST DOWNTOWN. Something of a local institution, Chuey’s has been in business for over 50 years. It may have changed locations a few times, but the same family still owns the restaurant and continues to be involved and on-site every day. It has a wide local following, people who love the warm, casual ambience, quick, friendly service and reliable, inexpensive Mexican-American eats. True, most folks opt for chile verde, chilaquiles or carnitas, but the burgers aren’t half bad. Ideal for lunch. The place takes on a nightclub atmosphere in the evenings. |

El Agave Tequileria |
|
(Restaurants - Mexican) |
|
2304 San Diego Ave, San Diego 92110 619-220-0692 |
 |
| |
Description:
OLD TOWN. El Agave Tequileria is the hands-down winner for tequila selection, but they have fantastic authentic food as well. Their Mole Poblano Don Julio (chicken and rice covered with a complex, multi-faceted mole sauce) is amazing; Pescado Tikin-Xik (sea bass with achiote and wrapped in a banana leaf) is succulent and satisfying; Sopecitos de Camarón (blue masa stuffed with shrimp and chipotle sauce) is unique and piquant. With a stock of hundreds of tequilas (so many that the place is actually considered a tequila museum), you know the margaritas are perfect. |

Description:
HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. No frills Mexican – the style is about as casual as it gets (order and pick up at the counter), but the food is fabulous. In business for over 50 years, El Indio is a solid favorite for burritos, tamales, and taquitos. Fresh and fast, everything is made in-house, including the chips. Great selection of take-and-bake type dishes, too. |

(Restaurants - Mexican) |
|
4474 Mission Blvd, San Diego 92109 858-490-2877 |

| |
Description:
PACIFIC BEACH. Well-known for its fishbowl-sized margaritas (happy hour specials make them wickedly affordable), a free-flowing champagne brunch on Sundays, and a fab patio outfitted with firepits. With a name like Gringo’s you know the food isn’t going to be the most authentic, but the regional specialties section of the menu includes some great options like Tampiquena (grilled sirloin with a manchego cheese enchilada, potato and chile gratin and roasted poblano rajas), and Pollo Huitlacoche (goat cheese stuffed chicken breast with roasted corn calabacitas and Huitlacoche sauce). More than 100 tequilas. |

Jimmy Carter's Mexican Cafe |
|
(Restaurants - Mexican) |
|
807 W Washington St, San Diego 92103 619-296-6952 |
 |
| |
Description:
HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. No, not the former US President. Jimmy Carter in this instance is a local restaurateur who wanted to provide a casual neighborhood eatery inexpensive but tasty food and friendly service. He succeeds on both counts. At first glance, the menu is a bit odd, including a hodge podge of international dishes. The standouts, though, are Mexican in origin. And though all the food is good, breakfast is awesome. Luckily, the stellar chilaquiles, huevos rancheros and breakfast burritos are available all day. |
