Description:
OLD TOWN. Although this is not the quickest or most scenic route into Mexico, it is the most convenient and least expensive. Upon arrival at the San Ysidro station on the US-Mexico border, you can hop over to Tijuana, where you'll find festive Mexican food and colorful souvenirs. The Blue Line starts at the Old Town Transit Center, but you can embark at several locations, including near PetCo Park. The trip takes approximately 40 minutes. |

Description:
CORONADO. The city of Coronado is located on an island-like peninsula just south of San Diego – you can drive via the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, but it's more scenic to take the ferry from Broadway Pier. Once in Coronado, you'll find sparkling white beaches and a host of restaurants, quaint shops and hotels. Most of the activity is centered on the beach-fronting Ocean Drive and on Orange Avenue. |

GASLAMP QUARTER. This 16-block section of downtown is a national historic district filled with specialty shops, art galleries and restaurants. Numerous theaters and nightclubs call the Gaslamp Quarter home, so there's plenty to do after the sun sets. It's also an excellent neighborhood for checking out some of the city's early Victorian architecture. Visit the William Heath Davis House, which has exhibits detailing Gaslamp history, to learn about the district's colorful past. 4th and 6th Avenues from Broadway to Harbor Drive. |

EAST SAN DIEGO COUNTY. The picturesque town of Julian, itself a registered historic landmark, got its start during a minor gold rush in the 1870s. Located about an hour out of San Diego, it’s a great destination for a day trip. Visitors can enjoy gold panning, carriage rides, browsing through the museum, touring a candy factory, or shopping at the town’s quaint antique shops, modern art galleries and gift boutiques. There are ranches for horseback riding and orchards for apple picking, plus nearby Lake Cuayamaca and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park for hiking, boating and camping. You can pick up a map and information at the chamber of commerce office. |

Description:
LA JOLLA. Initially conceived as a memorial to Korean War veterans, this site now features a series of walls paved with black granite plaques that honor individual figures from all wars and from all branches of the service. A 43-foot cross stands atop Mount Soledad, and a large flag flies to honor US military personnel. Along with being a memorial, the area offers a terrific view of greater San Diego from atop 822-foot Mount Soledad. It's also an excellent place to have a picnic or to enjoy spectacular sunsets. |

[Closed for restoration; no completion date set.] Built in 1877 by concert pianist and novelist Jesse Shepard, this elaborate Victorian mansion houses an impressive display of European and American antiques, leaded glass windows, masterfully carved ceilings and borders, and elegant marble fireplaces. Although located in a somewhat neglected part of town, the home provides an intriguing glimpse into the former lifestyles of San Diego's high society. Although the home is not open to the public, it does make for an impressive sight from the street. |

POINT LOMA. From December through March each year, thousands of gray whales instinctively return to the waters off southern California and Baja Mexico. H & M Landing provides memorable three- and five-hour offshore excursions. This is absolutely the best way to view these majestic creatures up close and personal (they've been known to come right up to the boat). H & M is so sure that you'll see the whales, that if for some reason you do not, they'll take you out again free of charge. Besides whales, you'll also see dolphins, seabirds and a host of other marine life. Other options are available – fishing trips, multiple day natural science excursions, scuba diving programs and more. |
