Description:
Shrimp and petroleum. Both are key industries in Louisiana and although a 90-mile drive is involved to get to Morgan City, it's time well spent! The Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival is a Labor Day weekend Cajun classic and happens to be the state's oldest harvest festival. There is a shrimp cooking contest, carnival rides and lots of country, Cajun and Zydeco music. The fun is free and down-home. There is a charge for food. |

A hallmark event for the local Black community, this football game between Southern University and Grambling State University draws zealous fans each year. Be sure to come for the whole weekend so you don't miss out on any of the festivities. The McDonald's Battle of the Bands and Greek Festival is sure to be a hit, and the Fan Festival gets everyone fired up! The game will be held at 1pm on Saturday, and Battle of the Bands at 7pm Friday night. Check web site for other events. |

Description:
This month long event draws hundreds of spectators. To celebrate the season, Jackson Square fills with carolers, choirs and musical artists who all joyfully sing at Christmas. There are candlelight processions, free concerts and the luminated beauty of Jackson Square and the French Quarter. Additional activities include guided candlelight tours of historical homes and private courtyards, as well as a number of events such as bonfires and holiday lights held across the city. Most events are free, but call ahead for listings and prices. |

Description:
New Orleans' signature festival originated as a religious holiday, but it's best known for its spectacular parades and frenetic party scene. Approximately two weeks of festivities culminate with this citywide holiday on the final Tuesday before Lent. The four major processions – Zulu, Rex, Elks, and Crescent City – travel from Napoleon Avenue to St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street. Over 15,000 riders, donning colorful masks, toss buckets of beads and themed coins to the crowds, who party far into the night. NB The official start of Mardi Gras is January 6, the "twelfth night" after Christmas. |

Nearly two dozen privately-owned homes in the French Quarter, Garden District and Uptown are open to the public during this ten-day spring event. Ticket-holders get intimate glimpses at some of the city's most gorgeous residences as well as private gardens and courtyards that often remain unseen by the casual passerby. Also part of the festivities is a French Quarter parade and – because this is New Orleans after all – plenty of opportunities to savor good food and drink. Particularly popular is the Sunday brunch, the cost for which includes tour tickets. |
