IONIA. Need an escape from city life? Pay a visit to this "rare breed and fiber farm," located east of Grand Rapids. Owned and operated by members of the Sherwood family, which has owned the land since 1886, Homestead allows guests to get up close and personal with Shetland sheep, Angora goats, Nigerian dwarf goats, llamas, and even a pair of miniature donkeys who answer to the names "Ben and Jerry." Learn about the shearing of fibers, wool, and mohair and how they're manufactured. After touring the farm, be sure to stop by the small gift shop where you can buy some of Homestead's "homespun" yarns, socks, and sweaters. |

Description:
Boasting nearly 1200 animal residents, John Ball Zoo is a 140-acre park located not far from downtown. The zoo traces its roots to 1884, when New Hampshire native John Ball bequeathed 40 acres of land to the city. Civic leaders helped turn the parcel into a large public park, and as the years went by, citizens donated animals to it, eventually resulting in the founding of the zoo. Today, among the zoo's exhibits are Living Shores Aquarium, Mokomoboso Valley Chimpanzee Exhibit, African Forest Edge Exhibit, and Bald Eagle Aviary. |
