Each spring (around the 20th of May to be more exact), bird-watchers flock to St. Louis County for this unique competition. Teams of enthusiasts scan the skies to spot and identify as many different bird species as possible (the record for one day is well over 170!). On the Sunday following the competition, teams gather with Hawk Ridge administration and event organizers for a celebratory brunch. A must for nature lovers. |

Grandma's Marathon, billed as a "world class event with small town charm," has been drawing runners to this friendly corner of Minnesota since the mid-1970s. The course follows Old Highway 61 along Lake Superior's northern shore before ending up at Duluth's popular Canal Park. Live entertainment follows day events. |
