Marked by exquisite woodwork, hand-painted ceilings, and ornate light fixtures, the Queen Anne-style home hearkens back to a time when extravagance was king. The home, which has been featured on A&E's "America's Castles" and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, looks much as it did in its heyday. 300 Marina Dr, Superior 54880 715-392-5742 |
 |
| |
Description:
SUPERIOR. Originally christened Frank D. Rockefeller (in 1896), the "S.S. Meteor" is known in nautical circles as a whaleback ship – that is, one whose round, whale-like design enables it to ride close to the water's surface. The ship once transported a wide range of cargo to shallow Great Lakes ports, from grain and sand to coal and even crude oil. Designed by Alexander McDougall, the "Meteor" is the only vessel of its kind still in existence – at one time as many as 44 were in service. |
