Description:
DULUTH. One of the area's most recognizable sights, Aerial Lift Bridge was completed in 1930, providing Duluth residents with road access to narrow Minnesota Point. The bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, actually opened in 1905 as an aerial transfer bridge and was inspired by one in Rouen, France. In 1929, traffic demands required removal of the bridge's massive gondola and a near-complete redesign. Specifically, its high towers were reinforced to withstand the pressure and weight necessary to lift the entire span skyward and allow vessels to easily pass underneath. Today, Duluth's rare Aerial Lift Bridge is a testament to early 20th-century engineering ingenuity. |

Description:
DULUTH. On a warm summer's night in 1920, three young African-Americans, Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie, were lynched by a mob of thousands in downtown Duluth for allegedly raping a local woman. Later, information surfaced that revealed all three men were innocent of the crime. Today, this memorial plaza at the corner of Second Avenue East and First Street remembers the tragedy of that night. Engraved throughout the plaza are quotes by famous scholars and historical persons, including the words "Atonement, Compassion and Respect," which appear on the memorial's main walkway. |
