        Description: ALTA. Open since the late 1930s, Alta is the country's second oldest ski resort. This popular venue has long been synonymous with great downhill skiing, and few runs are off-limits. Advanced skiers from around the world rave about Alta's steep powder fields and long, fast runs, especially the mile-long Crooked Mile and the high-speed Greeley Bowl. Beginners and intermediates are taken care of at Alta as well, with several slopes designated for them. Alta's ski season usually runs from November to May, but the mountain has several trails appropriate for summer hikes as well. Snowboarding is not permitted.

        Description: BRIGHTON. A former mining town, Brighton became Utah's first bona fide ski resort in 1936. Today, people still flood into the lofty Big Cottonwood Canyon town – not because it's fancy but because it's one of the best values for the buck. More than 60 world-class runs, value-priced skiing and snowboarding lessons, and an annual snowfall average of about 500 inches combine to make Brighton one of the best downhill options in the country.

        Description: SOLITUDE. Boasting more than 60 excellent runs that range in difficulty from beginner to expert, Solitude is one of the Wasatch Mountains' best-kept secrets. Not as developed as neighboring Alta and Brighton, this resort opened to the public in the late 1950s. Today, thanks to well over 400 inches of annual snowfall and 90-plus acres of snowmaking, not to mention a reasonable all-day fee, Solitude is one of the best winter playgrounds around.
