        Description: HELEN. Centrally located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, Anna Ruby Falls offers a break from the bustle of town and a glimpse of the natural scenery of the North Georgia Mountains. Named for historic local resident Anna Ruby Nichols Payne, the Falls rest at the confluence of Curtis and York Creeks. Bridges, footpaths, and hiking trails wind around the waterways and the falls. More adventurous visitors appreciate a longer trail that leads from the base of the falls to Unicoi State Park. On-site parking is available.

        Description: HIAWASSEE. Standing over 4700 feet above sea level, Brasstown Bald is the highest peak in the state and affords an outstanding panorama of the surrounding countryside – in fact, word has it that on a clear day, you can see all the way to Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The visitor center, which is at the summit, features a number of interpretative exhibits and educational programs, and for those who want to make a day of it, there are also hiking trails and picnic areas on the mountain. A word to the wise: At the peak of the fall season, the view from the Bald is nothing short of breathtaking.

        Description: Just off the Unicoi Turnpike (Highway 17/75), this section of the Georgia Mountains presents a number of beautiful vistas, landscapes and waterfalls, but reaching most of them requires an adventurous spirit and the willingness to do some hiking. Among the more scenic spots accessible from High Shoals' designated parking area are High Shoals Creek Falls and Blue Hole Falls, both of which have observation areas. As you walk the rhododendron-guarded trails, keep your eyes and ears alert – you might just get a chance to spot one or two of the critters who call High Shoals "home."

Raven Cliff Falls

        Description: Located just a few miles west of Helen, Raven Cliffs Falls is one of the area's most visually stunning (and most visited) natural landmarks. This 60-foot cascade falls over the steep facade that makes up Raven Cliffs, producing a stunning showcase of both nature's beauty and its sheer might. Getting to the falls from the pull-off area requires a moderate 2.5 mile hike along a creek-side trail. Keep your camera handy – you'll pass plenty of ferns, lilies and geraniums as you make your way up Dodd Creek to the waterfall's base.

Unicoi State Park and Lodge

        Description: HELEN. Head north on Helen's Main Street, and just a few minutes outside of town you'll find yourself at the entrance to Unicoi State Park. This popular park is revered for its 20-mile network of trails (12 for hikers, 8 for mountain bikers), some of which lead south into Helen and others as far north as enchanting Anna Ruby Falls. If hiking's not your thing, the park also features a lake and beach, canoe and paddle boat rentals, fishing docks, and even a ropes course. The lodge, meanwhile, has a restaurant, tennis courts, 100 guest rooms, 30 cottages and several modern and primitive campsites.
