Description:
DECATUR. Housed in Millikin's Gorin Hall, Birks Museum displays more than 1000 examples of antique European and Asian furniture and decorative items. The majority were donated by Florence and Jenna Birks, alumni of Millikin University. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibits each academic year that highlight everything from classic automobile hood ornaments to 16th-century china. Call ahead to schedule a group tour of the facility. |

Description:
DECATUR. A great place to take kids who thirst for fun and knowledge, the Children's Museum of Illinois presents hands-on exhibits that explore science, world cultures, art and everyday living. In "Johnston's Supermarket," for example, kids learn about grocery shopping (they can even choose to pay with cash or check!); meanwhile, "Where in the World Am I?" uses a camera kiosk to expose visitors to faraway places like Southeast Asia and Australia. |

Description:
DECATUR. Patriarch of one of Decatur's most prominent families, German-born Hieronymus Mueller patented several inventions during his lifetime, from the water tapper to the variable speed transmission. In fact, his lasting legacy was the Mueller Company, whose exploding shell contributed greatly to the WWII effort. Today, visitors and history buffs learn much about the Muellers at this facility, where exhibits highlight the family's history, along with their many inventions and patents and the growth of the Mueller Company. |

Description:
DECATUR. One of the area's foremost cultural institutions, the versatile Kirkland Center hosts an impressive repertoire of concerts, dance performances and theater productions each year. From Broadway hits like "Smokey Joe's Cafe" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" to contemporary dance performances by Thodos of Chicago, the Kirkland doesn't want for variety. In addition to the auditorium, the center houses the Perkinson Gallery, which exhibits visual art from Illinois and the Midwest, and the Studio and Lower Galleries, which focus, respectively, on student works and photography. |
