Description:
NEWTON. Set in the former Catawba County Courthouse, this facility showcases the Catawba Valley's long history. The 1924 structure presents artifacts from early settlers, including furniture, quilts, pottery, farming equipment, and military uniforms that range as far back as the Revolutionary War. A racecar from the 1930s also gives a nod to the region's fondness for auto racing. On display too are a recreated law office, jail cell, and other room settings that date to the early 20th century. |

SALT BLOCK. A perennial favorite of young folks from around the county, this educational museum offers ample opportunity to learn, discover, and play. Exhibits make the most of local topography, biology, and botany, teaching kids about the world just beyond their front doors. CONOVER. Charting the history of firefighting in the area, this museum delights visitors with its array of vintage engines and equipment. It also seeks to raise awareness of how fires can be prevented and minimized. Alarm and communication systems, firefighter uniforms and gear, and actual engines prove enlightening, and lectures on fire safety drive the point home. Photographs and displays of honors and awards personalize the exhibits, and there's even a turn-of-the-century fire pole and rescue net on display. |

Description:
SALT BLOCK. Occupying a portion of the old Claremont High School, whose beautiful architecture graces the SALT Block, this esteemed facility is recognized as NC's second-oldest art museum. HMA boasts strong collections of American pottery and art glass, NC clay vessels, outsider art, and American paintings and prints. They join temporary exhibits for a constantly changing, impressive display that's been mesmerizing visitors since the mid-20th century. A great gift shop is available as well. |
