Historic Haile Homestead at Kanapaha Plantation
(Attractions & Activities - Historic Sites)
8500 Archer Rd, Gainesville  32606 • 352-336-9096
Description: GAINESVILLE. Impeccably crafted of cypress and heart pine, this gracious home was built by a South Carolina family who came south to establish a cotton plantation. The 6200-square-foot structure was abandoned in the 1930s and finally restored in 1996. Today, its exhibits detail life during this developing era and highlight the social and economic milieu of north central Florida's early days. An interesting aspect of the home is that its inhabitants covered the walls with writings about everything from domestic inventories to personal contemplations. The name "kanapaha" refers to a particular type of Native American thatched hut.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Historic Site
(Attractions & Activities - Historic Sites)
18700 S CR 325, Cross Creek  32640 • 352-466-3672
Description: CROSS CREEK. Although it's not in Gainesville proper, this attraction provides a wonderful slice of literary history. Practically everyone who's read it has cried over Rawlings' book "The Yearling," and the home in which she wrote it is worthy of a pilgrimage. The site documents farm life during the 1930s and includes the homestead, the grounds and nature trails. Original furnishings and fixtures recall Florida's early days, and Rawlings' love for nature is evident. A fascinating journey into a writer's life and her remote, much-loved backwoods.
