Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, lived in Columbia as an adolescent from 1870 until 1874. The future president's mother, Jessie Woodrow Wilson, built their house from money she received as an inheritance from her brother. It was the only house the Wilsons ever owned. Today, magnolia trees planted by Mrs. Wilson still stand on the front lawn of the house, and the bed in which "young Tommy" was born still remains in the house.
